Poor earned his B.A. from Olivet College, and a Master's degree and a Ph. D. from the University of Michigan. He was considered one of CMU's most esteemed educators. He taught as a Professor of Secondary Education at CMU. He was given Emeritus status in 1973 when he retired. The one-room schoolhouse at CMU was named after him. Maybee was a history professor at CMU. The Clarke Historical Library has several of his publications and his papers. The Advisory Committee developed plans for major events, publications, re-dedications of campus buildings, presentations, and a historical marker for CMU's 75th Anniversary.
